Bollinger Road Safeway set to close Nov. 13, ending decades of neighborhood shopping
A Safeway at San Jose’s Orchard Farms Shopping Center is scheduled to close Nov. 13. Longtime customers say the store has been part of their lives for decades, while residents worry about losing a convenient place to shop.
A Safeway on Bollinger Road in San Jose is scheduled to close Nov. 13, according to a notice posted outside the store in the Orchard Farms Shopping Center.
For some neighbors, the closure means losing more than a nearby grocery store. San Jose resident Shayesteh Ahmed said her family has shopped there for decades and described the store as part of her family’s history.
“I sent them a message, I hope they renew it, because these are lifetime memories here,” Ahmed said. “Raised 2 of my daughters, oldest is 48.”
Other customers said the closure could be especially difficult for people who shop during off-hours. The store’s closing date is clear, but no reason for the decision has been announced. Albertsons, Safeway’s parent company, had not responded to questions about the closure.
The planned shutdown comes amid other Safeway closures in the region. Stores in San Francisco, Pinole, Vallejo and Hayward have closed over the past two years, according to reporting cited in local coverage.
