Scardina’s early strike sends Rhode Island FC back to the USL playoffs
Nick Scardina scored three minutes into a 1-0 win over Loudoun United, securing Rhode Island FC’s third consecutive USL Championship playoff appearance. The club can strengthen its seeding in Saturday’s regular-season home finale against Pittsburgh.
PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Rhode Island FC secured a place in the 2026 USL Championship playoffs Wednesday, extending its postseason run to three straight seasons with a 1-0 victory over Loudoun United FC.
Nick Scardina scored in the third minute. The goal, described by the club as record-breaking, proved to be the difference as Rhode Island clinched its playoff berth.
The team’s final regular-season home match is Saturday against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. The clubs are tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference standings, and a Rhode Island win would put the team in position for a top-four seed — a finish that would guarantee at least one home playoff match.
The playoff berth marks another postseason opportunity for the Pawtucket-based club, which now turns to the final stretch of the regular season to improve its position.
