An 18-year-old Coventry man faces two felony charges after police say he tried to enter a Main Street home while carrying a loaded gun. He was released on $5,000 surety bail with conditions, including mental health monitoring and surrendering firearms.
An 18-year-old Coventry man was charged with two felonies after police said he tried to enter a Main Street home while armed with a gun on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 14.
Officers were called to the home around 1:20 p.m. for a reported break-in in progress. The homeowner told police he was working when he heard a noise at the front door and saw the doorknob moving. When he opened the door, police said, he found a masked man later identified as Dylan Benda.
Police said Benda reached toward his waistband but did not take anything out. He left after the homeowner warned him that he was armed, according to police. Officers found Benda nearby and took him into custody. Police said they recovered a loaded gun in the area where he was found.
Benda told police he had been at the door and was carrying a gun belonging to his father, authorities said. Asked why he had gone to the home, he replied, “For the thrill of it,” police said.
Benda was arraigned Thursday on felony charges of attempted breaking and entering and using a firearm while committing a crime of violence. No plea was entered. He told the court he does not have a permit or license to carry a firearm.
He was released on $5,000 surety bail, with conditions requiring pretrial mental health monitoring and the surrender of all firearms. He is scheduled to return to court for a screening on Jan. 11, 2027.
