West Warwick’s adopted therapy dog Mouse dies after bringing comfort to residents
Mouse, found abandoned and malnourished in February 2025, was nursed back to health and adopted by the West Warwick Police Department. The department said she died Saturday morning, thanking the community members who supported her and welcomed her at local events.
WEST WARWICK, R.I. — Mouse, a dog adopted by the West Warwick Police Department after officers found her abandoned and ill, died Saturday morning, the department said.
Officers first encountered Mouse shivering under a bush in February 2025. She was malnourished and had lymphoma. The department named her for her small, frail frame and coloring, and a local veterinarian helped care for her over the following five months.
West Warwick police adopted Mouse in June 2025. She was later sworn in as the department’s compassion therapy dog and became a familiar presence at community events.
In a social media post announcing her death, the department thanked people who donated, volunteered, shared her story, brought her treats or stopped to greet her. The community’s support, police said, surrounded Mouse with the care she deserved.
The department said Mouse brought comfort and joy to people she met, and called her journey an example of what a community can do when it comes together to help one of its own.
