T.F. Green reopens 8,700-foot runway as final upgrades continue

T.F. Green International Airport’s primary runway returned to normal flight operations Friday afternoon, ending months of closure for rehabilitation work, the Rhode Island Airport Corporation said.

The 8,700-foot Runway 5-23 resumed normal operational status at 12:30 p.m., after the most significant portions of the project were completed, according to the airport corporation.

Remaining work includes installing signage, completing electrical work and painting runway markings. Airport officials expect that work to wrap up by the end of 2026. The corporation said the rehabilitated runway is expected to remain in service until the 2040s, when it will need to be reconstructed again.

Some residents near the airport’s new cargo facility may continue to hear or see construction activity through the end of the year, an airport spokesperson said, even though flight operations have returned to normal.
