Somerset police arrest three in $35,000 check fraud scheme at Citizens Bank

SOMERSET, Mass. — Three people have been arrested and a fourth summoned to court in connection with an alleged check fraud scheme at the Citizens Bank branch at 815 Grand Army Highway, Somerset police said Saturday.

Stasha Medeiros, Andre Cairo and Rajheem Chardonnette were taken into custody and charged with attempting to commit a crime, uttering a false check and conspiracy, according to police. A fourth person, who was not named, was summoned for involvement in the scheme and faces the same charges.

The case began on Oct. 28, when officers were called to the bank for a report of a woman allegedly trying to commit check fraud. Police said officers stopped the woman after she got into a vehicle near the bank.

Investigators determined that the woman had attempted to deposit a $35,000 check into a bank account that had been opened just one day earlier. The check had been made out in the suspect's name.

A bank teller contacted the business that reportedly issued the check, and the business confirmed the check was fraudulent, police said.

The arrests highlight the continuing threat of check fraud, a low-tech but persistent crime that can drain both financial institutions and the businesses whose names are forged. Authorities have repeatedly urged residents and bank employees to verify large or unusual transactions, particularly when they involve newly opened accounts.

Police did not release additional details about the investigation, including how the four individuals are alleged to have worked together or whether additional charges are expected. The three arrested are scheduled to appear in court; the summoned individual will face a future arraignment.
