Gunfire Rips Through Providence Home, Nearly Hits Sleeping Mother and Child

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A burst of gunfire tore through a three-story home on Colfax Street early Friday morning, sending bullets into two apartments and narrowly missing a mother and her young daughter as they slept, according to police and the family.

Officers responded to 112 Colfax St. at about 7:05 a.m. after reports of shots fired into a residence, according to a police report. They arrived to find numerous shell casings scattered on the street and multiple bullet holes in the building's exterior siding and interior walls.

Surveillance footage from the neighborhood shows a black Hyundai driving down Colfax Street shortly after 7 a.m., followed moments later by the sound of several gunshots. A witness told police that two people wearing dark sweatpants, sweatshirts and ski masks got out of a dark-colored Hyundai Sonata and opened fire on the house.

Inside the second-floor apartment, Tiffany Harmon was asleep when the shooting began.

"I was so scared," Harmon said. "It was so loud."

Harmon said she felt pieces of plaster from her bedroom wall fall onto her face as bullets punched through the apartment.

"And when I felt that stuff on my face, that's what made me realize it was shooting and it was that close to me," she said. "So, in that moment, I just needed to get to my daughter, you know, like I didn't know what else to do."

She crawled toward her 6-year-old daughter's bedroom while the shots were still ringing out, desperate to make sure the child was safe. Photos taken inside the apartment show multiple bullet holes, including one perilously close to where Harmon had been sleeping.

"If it came in straight, it would have hit my head," she said.

A woman living on the third floor was also awakened by the gunfire, according to the police report. She told investigators she dropped to the floor, yelled for her children to get down and crawled toward their bedroom. Police found multiple bullet holes in the third-floor apartment and projectiles in the hallway.

Despite the extensive damage, no injuries were reported.

A man whose mother lives next door said he learned about the shooting when she called him Friday morning. He was relieved his family was safe but troubled by the violence in a neighborhood where children regularly walk to school.

"Little kids walking, going to school," he said. "There's kids all walking through here in the mornings so, it's a good thing no one really got hurt at all really."

For Harmon, the shooting has left her questioning whether she can feel safe in her own home. She said she has lived in the apartment since 2022 and recently passed her real estate exam, working toward a better future for herself and her daughter.

"And right before this, I was telling my daughter, I'm going to get us out of here," she said. "But it's not going fast enough."

"I'm terrified," she added. "I really don't know what to do."

Despite the frightening experience, Harmon said she is leaning on her faith and grateful that she and her daughter survived.

"It was terrifying, you know? But by the grace of God, we are still here," she said.

The Providence Police Department's Detective Bureau is investigating the shooting. No arrests had been announced as of Friday evening.
