Police seek leads after dog attack on West Warwick riverwalk kills Coventry family’s pet
A Coventry man is asking for help identifying the owner of a dog that attacked and killed his 10-year-old Papillon on the Phenix-Harris Riverwalk in West Warwick on Oct. 4. Henry Brown said he was walking Oreo at about 4 p.m. when he encountered a man with a much larger dog. Brown said the man was holding the dog by its collar, and it was not leashed. Brown said the man let the dog go, and it attacked Oreo. In the struggle, Brown fell face-first down an embankment beside the Pawtuxet River. He said the other man left with the dog while Brown was trying to climb back up. Brown was not seriously hurt, but Oreo’s injuries were severe. Brown said he took the dog to a hospital, where he had to have him euthanized. Oreo’s death has upended the family’s daily routines, said Brown’s niece, Kristen Legare. She described the dog as a member of the family and said her aunt and uncle had built their days around caring for him. Legare is seeking information that could identify the man and his vehicle, described as a gray sedan. She urged people who live along the trail to check surveillance footage from around 4 p.m. on Oct. 4 for images of the car leaving the area. The Coventry Police Department confirmed the incident is under investigation. The owner has not been identified.
