Nor’easter strips sand from Scarborough beach, prompting ramp closures

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management estimates a recent storm removed 2 to 3 feet of sand at Scarborough State Beach, leaving waves to hit the seawall. Sections at the ends of boardwalk ramps are taped off, and the state will monitor the shoreline for natural sand recovery.

Nor’easter strips sand from Scarborough beach, prompting ramp closures
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — An early-season nor’easter has left parts of Scarborough State Beach with less sand and new safety concerns, prompting officials to block access to the ends of boardwalk ramps. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management estimates the storm washed away 2 to 3 feet of sand. At high tide, the roughly 20-foot strip of beach that usually lies between the shoreline and the seawall is gone, allowing waves to reach the concrete barrier. Rebar exposed near sections of the ramps also poses a potential hazard. Sue Calkins, a Connecticut resident who has visited Scarborough with her family for more than 50 years, said she had not seen the beach in such condition. She noted that rocks normally covered by sand were visible, along with the loss of sand and ramp closures. The state agency said erosion from storms is not unusual at the beach, but such impacts are happening more frequently. It plans to keep assessing the shoreline over the coming months to see whether sand returns through natural processes. The beach parking lot is expected to remain open. The agency’s monitoring will help track whether the damaged areas recover and what conditions visitors may encounter along the coast.
