New Bedford ‘Free Them All’ rally centers families affected by deportation

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — At a “Free Them All” rally at Riverside Park on Saturday, Oct. 24, immigrant-rights advocates called for an end to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and changes to the nation’s immigration system, while speakers recounted the effects of enforcement on their families.

The Massachusetts chapter of the Immigrant Justice Network, also known as LUCE, organized the gathering. The coalition describes itself as a network of immigrant-led grassroots groups that provides organizing, information-sharing and mutual-aid support across the state.

Daniela Villanueva said ICE deported her mother, leaving Villanueva in foster care and unable to see her. “It’s something very painful to see your parents in that position,” she said. “And knowing you can’t do anything, you feel helpless.”

The rally came after recent ICE activity in southeastern Massachusetts. Advocates said more than two dozen people were detained in New Bedford, Dartmouth and Fall River last month. They noted that organizations have reported differing totals.

Andrea James, an independent candidate for Massachusetts governor, told the crowd she supports abolishing ICE. Asked what should replace the agency, James said the country needs a “fair and just immigration policy.”

Organizers said they plan to keep pressing municipal and state leaders for action as Election Day approaches.
