Coventry 18-year-old released on $5,000 bail after gun-related home-entry allegation

An 18-year-old Coventry man accused of trying to enter a home while carrying a loaded revolver was released on $5,000 bail Thursday and ordered to surrender any firearms, police said.

Dylan Benda appeared in court a day after the alleged incident near the Coventry Community Center. Police said the homeowner heard someone at the front door and opened it to find a masked person. After exchanging words with the homeowner, the person reached toward his waistband and ran, according to police.

Officers later found a loaded revolver nearby, police said. Investigators said Benda acknowledged being the person who tried to enter the home and told them the gun belonged to his father. Asked why he did it, Benda reportedly replied, “For the thrill of it.” Police said he did not have a permit to carry the firearm.

Benda was referred to pretrial mental health services and is due back in court in January. The allegations have not been proven in court.

The incident has unsettled people in the neighborhood. Tracey Koch, a neighbor, said he is now more careful to keep his doors locked and pay attention to what is happening around him, describing the episode as “scary.” The homeowner told local television reporters that he and his family were shaken by Benda’s release on bail.
