Kulture nightclub must close for eight days after Providence stabbing report

Kulture nightclub must close for eight days after Providence stabbing report

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence Board of Licenses ordered Kulture nightclub to close for eight days and establish a new security plan after a guard reported being stabbed during a disturbance early Monday.

At a Thursday hearing, officials said a fight broke out at the club and security staff used pepper spray. The guard reported being stabbed as people were escorted from the venue. Police have been working to identify a suspect.

The club’s security cameras were not working that night, limiting investigators’ ability to establish where and how the incident occurred, board Chair Peter Mancini said. The board considered requiring working cameras before Kulture could reopen, but ultimately rejected that condition.

Kulture attorney Nick Hemond argued that the camera failure did not establish a security lapse and said a technical problem should not prevent the business from operating. He also pointed to the club’s record: Board members said it had few prior violations during its five years in operation.

Mancini said the club’s history informed the board’s decision to approve the closure and security-plan requirements without making camera repairs a condition of reopening. The board’s order follows a reported violent incident that has left police without footage that could help clarify what happened.

The board also postponed consideration of a separate matter involving a fight at Costantino’s Venda Bar & Ristorante while police work with the business on a plan.
