Two Injured in Downtown Portland Attack Before Police Fatally Shoot Suspect
Portland police shot and killed a man after officers arrived during an attack involving a utility knife in the 700 block of Southwest Alder Street. Two people were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A man died after Portland police shot him downtown on Oct. 16, following reports that he was attacking people with a utility knife, police said. Two men who were attacked were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Central Precinct officers were sent shortly after 4:30 p.m. to the 700 block of Southwest Alder Street, where police said a suspect was actively assaulting and threatening people. Officers who arrived reported seeing an attack in progress and fired at the man. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Police said investigators recovered a Husky-brand utility knife with a broken blade at the scene. The man’s name had not been released, and officials had not provided further details about the circumstances of the attacks.
Kate Bolling, owner of Wines on Broadway, said a man entered her bar around 4 p.m. Thursday, appearing distressed and yelling. She said he asked for a gun he believed she had for him. Bolling said she got him to leave; he ran into the street and turned onto Alder. She later saw someone running down Broadway against traffic and said she was fairly confident it was the same man.
Two people were subsequently attacked, according to police. Witnesses told KATU the man had run into businesses while crying and yelling. Portland Fire & Rescue initially described the response as a multiple-victim traumatic scene.
The Bureau of Emergency Communications declined to release the 911 call audio or transcript, citing the active investigation. Police have not released the names of the officers involved or body-camera footage. The officer who fired is on administrative leave, consistent with bureau policy.
The shooting is Portland police’s third fatal shooting and fourth deadly use of force this year, according to the bureau’s public summaries. On Sept. 24, officers fatally shot 39-year-old Eddie Todd Campbell during an encounter at a Southeast Portland motel. The bureau generally releases the identities of officers involved in deadly force incidents about two weeks afterward.
