Teacher and father intervened during deadly shooting at Bend elementary school

A teacher and a parent intervened as a 16-year-old gunman opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday, actions police say helped stop the attack. Three students and a teacher were killed, and two other people were seriously injured.

The gunman, Griffin J. John II, was killed inside the school by Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two Silver Rail students who followed him into the building with a legally secured pistol, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said Friday. Giamanco’s role was also confirmed by his mother, according to the Associated Press.

Inside a special education classroom, a teacher threw her phone at the teenager, then tackled and fought with him, Krantz said. She was not seriously injured. Giamanco entered the classroom during the struggle and shot John, the chief said.

“The teacher in the classroom threw her cell phone at the suspect, then tackled him and fought to take the firearm from him,” Krantz said at a news conference. He praised her actions and thanked the person who confronted the shooter.

Police said John approached the school carrying a gun, threw it over a fence and climbed onto campus. At least two drivers saw him. One confronted him from a pickup truck; John fired at the vehicle and hit it at least three times, Krantz said. The driver then left to call 911, while another driver — the father — followed John toward the school.

John entered through the locked doors after shooting out their windows, then went into a nearby classroom and fired as many as 15 rounds, police said. Investigators found a Maverick .88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun and 44 rounds of ammunition with or near him. The first emergency call came at 12:59 p.m.; police arrived less than five minutes later, Krantz said.

Police identified two of those killed as 5-year-old kindergartner Rhoam Summer and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. At the request of their families, the names of two boys, ages 8 and 11, were not released.

Lambert’s family said she graduated from Mountain View High School in Bend in 2019 and Boise State University in 2023. She had worked as a substitute at Silver Rail before being hired for her first teaching position. Her family said she had wanted to teach in the district she loved and described the job as her dream.

A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were seriously injured. The child was in serious but stable condition at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Krantz said. The teacher, identified by her family as Becky Drury, was being treated at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend and was expected to survive. Her family expressed gratitude for the support from the community, according to a statement from her husband.

John had previously attended Silver Rail but was not enrolled in Bend-La Pine public schools at the time of the shooting. Police had not established a motive as of Friday.
