CANBERRA — David Shoebridge was elected leader of Australia’s Greens on Wednesday, winning a 7-4 party-room vote against senators Mehreen Faruqi and Sarah Hanson-Young. The ballot followed Larissa Waters’ sudden resignation as leader. Shoebridge has vowed to position the Greens to replace the Labor Party. The Greens are a left-wing minor party with influence in Australia’s Senate, where they hold a balance-of-power role. Steph Hodgins-May, running on a joint leadership ticket with Shoebridge, won the deputy leadership by 6-5 over Tasmanian senator Vanessa Bleyer. Hanson-Young and Jordon Steele-John were eliminated in the first round; Hanson-Young received two votes. Faruqi, who had been deputy leader, lost her position in the reshuffle and criticized the outcome, a dispute that exposed divisions within the party. The new leadership team now faces the challenge of shaping the Greens’ direction and working with Labor and other senators in a chamber where the party’s votes can affect legislation.
