With the November midterms approaching, Sen. Bernie Sanders is using his campaign funds to support Democrats in competitive races, including Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan’s bid for the U.S. Senate. Sanders’ campaign is in the process of transferring hundreds of thousands of dollars to Flanagan’s campaign, according to his campaign and a person familiar with the transfer. The planned contribution is among the first donations Sanders has made from his campaign account for the general election. The Vermont independent also plans to financially support Angie Nixon’s Senate campaign in Florida and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s reelection bid, his campaign said. The candidates are among those Sanders has endorsed. Sanders’ campaign had nearly $23 million on hand as of July 1. Separately, he has raised $2.8 million this cycle for candidates he supports. His campaign spending follows months of travel to promote progressive candidates, several of whom won their primaries. The funding offers Sanders another way to shape races beyond campaigning in person. His donations are aimed at helping endorsed candidates compete in the final stretch before voters go to the polls in November.
