A Russian drone strike hit a passenger train traveling from Kyiv toward Warsaw on Sunday morning near the Ukraine-Poland border, according to Ukraine’s state rail operator. The locomotive was struck in Volyn Oblast, about two kilometers from the border, as drones targeted the area around the Yahodyn–Dorohusk crossing. Ukrainian authorities had warned the train crew about the threat before the strike, the rail operator said. No injuries were reported among passengers or railway workers. Separate video footage circulated online showing a large fire at a gas station near the same border crossing. Local reports did not indicate whether anyone was hurt in that incident. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the attacks showed the war’s growing proximity to the European Union and NATO. In a statement, he said Russian forces were “knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO” and called on allied governments to impose stronger sanctions on the Kremlin. The strike came as European officials and intelligence agencies have warned of a widening Russian campaign involving military pressure, sabotage, cyberoperations and other forms of hybrid warfare. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last month that Europe was facing an escalating campaign of threats. The attack near a major international rail and road crossing underscores the risks faced by civilian transportation and border communities as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues. It also raises fresh concerns for European governments about the possibility that attacks and disruption could increasingly reach infrastructure serving travel and trade with EU member states.
