Ryland’s six field goals lift Cardinals past Rams in last-second win

Ryland’s six field goals lift Cardinals past Rams in last-second win

The Arizona Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Rams 18-16 Sunday at SoFi Stadium, ending a four-game losing streak with Chad Ryland’s 35-yard field goal as time expired.

Ryland made all six of his attempts, accounting for every Arizona point. The Cardinals went 0-for-5 in the red zone and did not score a touchdown, but their defense kept the game close by limiting the Rams to 286 yards and 16 points.

Los Angeles appeared to take control late. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford connected with Colby Parkinson for a 6-yard touchdown with 47 seconds remaining, putting the Rams ahead 16-15 after punter Ethan Evans made the extra point. Arizona, out of timeouts, moved into field-goal range when Jalen Brooks caught a 21-yard pass and a personal-foul penalty against Rams defensive back Josh Wallace added yardage.

The win lifts Arizona to 2-4 and snaps an eight-game losing streak against NFC West opponents. Both of the Cardinals’ victories this season have come at SoFi Stadium. Arizona also won without a touchdown for the first time since a 12-7 victory over Tennessee in December 2017.

The defensive performance marked a sharp response after a blowout loss to Detroit the previous week. Arizona pressured Stafford and made key stops, including a fumble forced by Cody Simon with the Rams deep in Cardinals territory. Safety Budda Baker, who had missed Friday’s practice with an injury, also delivered a strong performance.

The result offers relief for a team facing heightened criticism after its recent losses, but the offense’s red-zone struggles remain a concern. Arizona will try to build on the win when it returns home to face the Denver Broncos next week.
