ASU to pay former hockey coach Greg Powers nearly $1.33 million after departure
Arizona State will pay former hockey coach Greg Powers 75% of the more than $1.77 million remaining on his contract. His departure came after player Matthew Mayich collapsed during an outdoor workout and the university commissioned an independent review.
Former Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers will receive nearly $1.33 million under a separation agreement with the university, which says the two sides agreed to part ways.
Powers’ final day of employment was Oct. 16, nearly two months after 21-year-old transfer player Matthew Mayich collapsed during an outdoor workout on Aug. 20. Mayich remains hospitalized on life support. His family’s attorneys have said his condition is irreversible.
Under an Oct. 14 departure letter signed by Powers, ASU will pay him 75% of the money left on his contract in three installments: $531,923.08 initially, followed by $398,942.31 in August 2027 and another $398,942.31 in August 2028. The university said more than $1.773 million remained on Powers’ contract, which had been extended through 2030. The agreement provides a larger payout than Powers would have received if the university had fired him, according to ASU.
Powers was placed on paid leave Sept. 30, two days after seven teammates anonymously called for an independent investigation. The school had conducted an internal review, and ASU hired former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales on Oct. 2 to lead an independent review of Mayich’s collapse.
The workout was led by a former Green Beret. ASU has faced criticism over its response and questions about whether the team followed the athletic program’s heat-safety protocols. The available details do not establish findings from the independent review.
A day after the separation agreement was reached, ASU hired former NHL head coach Dave Hakstol to lead the hockey team. The Sun Devils won both games over the weekend with Hakstol behind the bench.
