Scottsdale board sets Laguna, Copper Ridge closures for end of school year

A 3-2 vote means Laguna and Copper Ridge will close after this school year, while Desert Canyon and Redfield will stay open. The decision followed weeks of public debate and a county attorney’s finding that earlier school-closure advisory meetings violated Arizona’s Open Meeting Law.

Scottsdale board sets Laguna, Copper Ridge closures for end of school year
The Scottsdale School Board voted Tuesday to close Laguna and Copper Ridge at the end of the school year, rejecting a proposal to delay the decision and explore other financial options. The 3-2 vote followed several weeks of emotional public comment. Board members Amy Carney and Carine Werner opposed moving forward now, while the majority said the decision was difficult. “I don’t want to close schools, and I’m deeply frustrated to be in this position,” board member Matthew Pittinsky said. Desert Canyon and Redfield, the other schools considered for closure, will remain open. More than 100 people attended the meeting at Coronado High School. Some parents urged the board to wait a year and further review the data. Others said they needed a decision so they could plan for their children’s education. Parent Lindsay Powers asked the board to “pause and grant more time to evaluate the data.” With the closures set, families are weighing whether to remain in the district or seek charter or private-school options. Before the board’s debate, members acknowledged a letter from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office stating that the district violated Arizona’s Open Meeting Law by holding school-closure advisory meetings without opening them to the public. The committee that met earlier this year recommended three possible closure plans. Because its work is complete, the county attorney said corrective action can no longer be required.
