Mesa man held on $500,000 bond in alleged threat case
An 18-year-old Mesa man was arrested early Tuesday in an investigation into alleged threats and preparations for a mass attack, according to court records and prosecutors. Damien Alexander Bedonie is charged with one felony count of making a terrorist threat and is being held at the Lower Buckeye Jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond. At Bedonie’s initial court appearance Oct. 7, Maricopa County prosecutor Ashley Stetson said search warrants revealed internet searches about buying weapons within a specified budget and obtaining tactical gear. Investigators also found searches about the 2015 Paris attacks, the Boston Marathon bombing and the 2022 Uvalde school shooting, Stetson told the court. Prosecutors said Bedonie had expressed hatred toward specific groups and talked about harming them. Stetson described him as “incel-adjacent,” referring to a misogynistic online subculture, and said authorities assessed his behavior using the FBI’s pathway-to-violence model. The allegations have not been tested at trial. Authorities have not disclosed who Bedonie may have targeted or whether he acquired any weapons or gear. Mesa police and FBI agents took him into custody as part of the investigation, court documents state. Bedonie is scheduled to return to Maricopa County Superior Court on Oct. 12.
