Preston Lord’s grandfather renews calls for Gilbert police chief’s resignation
A petition with more than 1,000 signatures urges Gilbert leaders to remove Police Chief Michael Soelberg, whom Preston Lord’s grandfather blames for failures in responding to teen assaults. Mayor Scott Anderson said town leadership respects residents’ right to raise concerns and remains committed to transparency and accountability.
GILBERT, Ariz. — Nearly three years after 16-year-old Preston Lord was fatally beaten outside a Halloween party, his grandfather is again calling for Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg to resign, as a petition demanding Soelberg’s removal has gathered more than 1,000 signatures.
Tony Reich says Gilbert police failed to adequately address repeated attacks on teenagers, including assaults linked to a group known as the Gilbert Goons. He argues that stronger police action could have prevented Lord’s death. Those claims are Reich’s allegations; the information available does not detail specific investigative findings establishing that the department’s actions caused Lord’s death.
“Give it up. Resign,” Reich said in a message directed at Soelberg. He has also called for investigations into the police department, former Town Manager Patrick Banger and the Town Council, and criticized Soelberg’s prior pledges of transparency.
Soelberg has taken on an interim town-management role while Gilbert seeks a permanent replacement. The position was posted publicly in September, and applications closed in October; it was not clear whether Soelberg applied or is under consideration. Reich objects to Soelberg having a broader role in town policy and procedures.
Mayor Scott Anderson said residents have a right to express their views about Soelberg’s leadership. In a statement, Anderson said town leaders recognize that public trust depends on transparency, accountability and listening, and that strengthening trust remains central to their work. The town, police department and council members did not respond to questions about the petition and residents’ concerns.
