Phoenix opens one-on-one help for residents applying for food assistance

The city is offering free guidance with SNAP applications, renewals and work rules as Arizona’s enrollment has fallen by more than half over 12 months. Residents can book virtual or in-person appointments at three family service centers, with walk-ins accepted.

Phoenix opens one-on-one help for residents applying for food assistance

Phoenix residents can get free, one-on-one help applying for or renewing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits through a new city initiative, officials announced Oct. 26, 2026. The program also offers guidance on SNAP work requirements and help after an application is submitted.

The city’s effort comes as Arizona has experienced a decline of more than 50% in SNAP enrollment over a 12-month period. The drop has followed federal changes that tightened work requirements for the food assistance program, alongside paperwork hurdles that can complicate applications and renewals.

“Far too many people are losing their nutritional safety net because of federal changes, paperwork errors, and red tape,” Mayor Kate Gallego said in a statement. She said the city’s support is intended to help families, children and older residents facing high food costs.

Residents may schedule appointments online or seek in-person help at the John F. Long, Sunnyslope or Travis L. Williams Family Services Center. Walk-ins are also welcome. Appointments can be held virtually or in person.

The city recommends bringing any available records that may support an application or renewal, including identification, proof of address, household income information, Social Security numbers and bank statements. Residents should also bring relevant records of volunteer hours or participation in federal workforce programs, along with any notices from the Arizona Department of Economic Security about benefit renewals or updates.

Federal changes are expected to continue affecting the program. A cost-sharing provision in the law is scheduled to take effect next October, which experts expect could put additional pressure on SNAP.

Details and appointment information are available through Phoenix’s SNAP Navigation Support program webpage.
