Phoenix plans $2 on-demand rides in South, West and North Phoenix
The city’s three-year PHX Link pilot will offer rides between virtual pickup points in three areas, with the goal of connecting residents to transit and nearby destinations. Trips will cost $2 and can be requested through an app or by phone.
Phoenix plans to begin a three-year, $2-per-ride on-demand transportation pilot this month, serving designated areas in South, West and North Phoenix through its PHX Link program.
Riders will be able to request trips through the PHX Link app or by phone. Instead of fixed bus stops, the service will use virtual pickup points around each zone, allowing drivers and passengers to meet at designated locations.
The South Phoenix zone runs from Broadway Road south to Dobbins Road, and from Central Avenue west to 59th Avenue. It includes connections to South Mountain trails. In North Phoenix, the service area generally spans Union Hills Drive to Happy Valley Road, between 51st Avenue and 16th Street. The West Phoenix zone covers the area from McDowell Road to Camelback Road and from 107th Avenue east to 75th Avenue.
The city says the service is intended to address gaps in the transit network, including places where residents have difficulty reaching a bus stop. Sarah Brown, Phoenix’s special transportation program manager, said the rides could also help people reach destinations such as restaurants, libraries, schools and community centers.
Brown said PHX Link is designed to complement public transit, including by reducing the distance riders have to walk between a bus trip and home. The city plans to fund most of the pilot with grants, with additional support from Phoenix Transportation 2050 funds.
Phoenix Transportation is scheduled to hold informational pop-up meetings at multiple locations Oct. 20-22. Details about the service and meetings are available on the city’s PHX Link webpage.
