Phoenix intersection camera feeds may remain limited through 2027 as network is rebuilt
Phoenix is replacing network equipment at 1,300 intersections and renovating its Traffic Management Center, leaving many camera feeds offline during the work. The city says traffic signals continue to function safely, but crews may need to visit intersections to adjust signal timing remotely unavailable during the upgrade.
Many cameras used to monitor Phoenix intersections are offline while the city rebuilds the network that connects them, a project officials expect to continue until late 2027.
The work covers equipment at 1,300 intersections and coincides with a renovation of the city’s Traffic Management Center, where staff watch camera feeds, spot problems and coordinate repair crews. The city’s Street Transportation Department identified the need for a redesigned camera network in 2024 as Phoenix grew.
Matt Wilson, the department’s assistant director, said the camera outage does not affect traffic signal operation or public safety. But without some camera feeds, staff have less visibility into intersection conditions, and they cannot remotely update signal timing plans at locations that are not connected to the internet. In those cases, crews must go to the intersection to make changes, he said.
The city is installing a new network switch at each of the 1,300 intersections. Wilson said the redesigned system and renovated control center are expected to be operational around the same time, in late 2027.
The center’s renovation will add updated technology and a video wall that allows operators to view more intersections at once. Wilson said the center’s basic functions will remain the same, even with the upgrades.
For drivers and pedestrians, the city’s assurance that signals remain operational addresses immediate safety concerns, while the prolonged loss of some camera feeds means staff have less ability to monitor conditions remotely during the transition. The department says crews remain available to respond and carry out work at intersections as needed.
