Phoenix advances plans for 12,000-square-foot senior center at Aguila Park
Phoenix is moving ahead with plans for a 12,000-square-foot senior center at Aguila Park in Laveen, near 35th Avenue and Baseline Road, city officials said Oct. 6, 2026. A feasibility assessment will examine potential features, including multipurpose rooms, commercial kitchens and a fitness center. The city has not announced a construction schedule or a final list of programs and amenities. Vice Mayor Kesha Hodge Washington, who sponsored senior classes in Laveen over the summer, said attendance and community support were strong. She said she was interested in seeing what programming the proposed center will offer and hoped older residents would remain engaged and active. Ismael Cantu of the Area Agency on Aging said senior centers can connect older adults with one another and with useful resources. Transportation barriers, including difficulty driving at night, can contribute to isolation, he said; a center in Laveen could help address that gap. The proposal would add a dedicated place for older residents to gather in the southwest Phoenix community. Its eventual services and scope will depend in part on the findings of the feasibility assessment.
