Phoenix cold-case investigation leads to arrest in two sexual assault cases
Phoenix police say DNA evidence connected 66-year-old Martine Garcia to sexual assaults reported in 1997 and 2001. Investigators followed a familial DNA lead before obtaining a warrant for Garcia’s DNA, according to police.
Phoenix police have arrested Martine Garcia, 66, in connection with two sexual assaults involving women who were allegedly abducted from city streets, blindfolded in a truck and assaulted. The cases date to 1997 and 2001, and Garcia has denied involvement, according to court records cited by police.
The first assault was reported near 24th Street and Van Buren; the second occurred near 11th Avenue and Grand. Investigators collected DNA evidence in both cases and determined the samples pointed to the same suspect, Phoenix police Sgt. Sheree Lee said.
The investigation gained a new lead last year when a DNA database entry produced a potential familial match. Police traced that lead to a family member who was too young to have committed the assaults, then focused on Garcia. Investigators obtained a search warrant for his DNA, Lee said, and arrested him in connection with both cases.
Court records say Garcia worked as a truck driver during the years of the assaults. He questioned the accuracy of the DNA testing and denied involvement, according to the records.
Garcia is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. The arrest comes decades after the assaults, as police continue to investigate unsolved cases involving preserved DNA evidence. Lee said investigators hope the arrest will help the victims see justice.
