Blood clots in lungs leave Eagles QB Jalen Hurts unlikely to return this season

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is unlikely to return this season after doctors diagnosed him with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, the team and his agent, Nicole Lynn, announced Monday.

Hurts, 28, is beginning treatment with blood thinners and cannot play football until that treatment plan is complete. The team said his prognosis is “very good” and that he is expected to make a full recovery, but the timing makes a return during the 2026 season unlikely.

The Eagles first disclosed a blood clot last Thursday, ruling Hurts out of their game against the Carolina Panthers. The team placed him on injured reserve Saturday. The initial clot was found during an ultrasound in London on Oct. 10; Hurts played in a game there, but a follow-up scan in Philadelphia showed the clot had moved.

Backup Tanner McKee started Sunday against Carolina, a 25-14 Eagles loss, and is expected to remain the starter. Philadelphia has now lost four straight after opening the season 2-0.
