Wounded Philadelphia officer expected to leave hospital two weeks after partner’s death

Philadelphia police Officer Hector Rodriguez was expected to leave Penn Presbyterian Medical Center on Saturday, two weeks after he was seriously wounded in a West Philadelphia shooting that killed his partner, Officer Shane Seiber.

Rodriguez, 33, was shot 12 times in the Oct. 10 incident, according to officials. Seiber, 40, was shot three times and died. Rodriguez’s expected release was announced by the Police Department, which thanked people for supporting him, his family and the department.

Rodriguez attended Seiber’s funeral earlier in the week while still hospitalized. Seiber’s uncle, Dan Farris, expressed hope that Rodriguez would continue to recover. Seiber is survived by his wife and two young children; Rodriguez has a wife and five children.

Eric Lewis, 35, is charged in connection with Seiber’s killing and faces 10 counts of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, along with other charges. Authorities also accuse him of firing at nine other officers during the encounter. Lewis faces federal charges as well and remains in custody, with bail set at $2 million. Court documents list a preliminary hearing for Oct. 26, 2026.

The deaths and injuries have left two families and the Police Department coping with the loss of Seiber and Rodriguez’s recovery. The department said its support for both families would continue beyond the initial days after the shooting.
