Niyaz Burgess admits to 2024 Philadelphia carjacking and shooting
Niyaz Burgess, 20, pleaded guilty to carjacking and firearm offenses tied to a July 2024 attack on Limeklin Pike. He is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 15 and faces a possible life sentence.
A Montgomery County man has pleaded guilty to carjacking and firearm offenses stemming from a 2024 shooting in Philadelphia, prosecutors said.
Niyaz Burgess, 20, admitted Thursday to carjacking a man and using, carrying and firing a gun during the incident. Just before 3 a.m. on July 14, 2024, Burgess shot the victim on Limeklin Pike and drove away in the man’s car, prosecutors said.
The victim was shot in the abdomen and arm and suffered significant internal injuries.
Pennsylvania State Police found the crashed, abandoned vehicle the next day on Interstate 95 in Tinicum Township. Troopers secured the car and transferred it to Philadelphia police for forensic testing. Investigators found Burgess’ fingerprints and palm print on the vehicle, officials said.
Burgess is due to be sentenced Feb. 15. He faces up to life in prison, five years of supervised release and a $500,000 fine; the offenses carry a mandatory minimum prison term of 10 years.
