West Philadelphia stabbing leaves 53-year-old dead after hours-long home confrontation
Mark Burton was found dead inside a North Edgewood Street home Thursday after police escorted two women to safety and negotiated a suspect’s surrender. The suspect was identified by police sources as 52-year-old Marvis Davis; formal charges had not been announced.
A 53-year-old man was found dead inside a West Philadelphia home Thursday morning after a stabbing prompted a police response and a barricade situation on the unit block of North Edgewood Street.
Police arrived shortly after 9 a.m. following a report of a stabbing and an armed man inside the residence. Officers brought two women out of the home safely. Police sources said the women had been upstairs with the suspect, who initially refused to leave.
After a brief negotiation with SWAT officers, the suspect surrendered, and officers found the victim, identified by relatives as Mark Burton, dead from stab wounds in a bedroom. Sources said the body appeared to have been there for some time.
Police sources identified the suspect as 52-year-old Marvis Davis. Authorities had not released a photograph or announced formal charges Thursday while the charging process was underway.
Burton’s family said he had shared the home with Davis for about two years and that the two often argued. Relatives said they did not know what led to the killing or the identities of the women removed from the house.
Cyrell Green, Burton’s cousin, said the family learned of the death after a relative arrived at the home and called them. Green said the family did not know what happened, but that Burton should not have been harmed. Green also called for justice and said the community needed to address violence.
