Philadelphia police Officer Hector Rodriguez was released from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center on Saturday, Oct. 24, after surviving a shooting that killed his partner, Sgt. Shane Seiber.
Rodriguez, 33, was shot 12 times on Oct. 10 on 52nd Street in West Philadelphia. Seiber was shot three times and later died of his injuries.
Nurses and Philadelphia police personnel gathered outside the hospital as Rodriguez was wheeled out on a hospital bed. He had been up and walking since the previous week, according to law enforcement sources cited in the report. Rodriguez, a father of five, now faces another phase of recovery; no further details about his condition or recovery plans were provided.
First Deputy Police Commissioner John M. Stanford Jr. described Rodriguez’s discharge as a moment of joy amid grief over Seiber’s death. Rodriguez and his wife attended Seiber’s funeral Tuesday at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, where speakers and members of Seiber’s family expressed support for the surviving officer.
