A 37-year-old man died after Philadelphia police officers shot him Friday evening in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia, police said Saturday.

Officers went to the 5100 block of Funston Street at about 5:20 p.m. after a 911 call reporting a man with a gun, according to police. Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said Friday that officers found the man holding a handgun to his head and secured the area as additional officers arrived.

Police said officers tried to talk with the man for about 15 minutes. When he pointed the gun at them, seven officers — including three supervisors — fired, police said. The man was struck multiple times and taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Stanford also said police had responded earlier Friday to a domestic dispute involving the man and his significant other. Police have not released the man’s name.

The officers involved will be placed on administrative duty while an internal investigation is conducted, police said. Authorities have not released further details about the investigation.
