A sleeping truck driver was awakened early Tuesday as six men removed two pallets of frozen snow crab from his vehicle on Island Avenue. Police said the men chased him away and left in several vehicles; the investigation is ongoing.
About 3,000 pounds of frozen snow crab were stolen from a cargo truck early Tuesday in Southwest Philadelphia, police said.
The driver was sleeping in the truck, parked on the 3400 block of Island Avenue, when he awoke at about 4:57 a.m. to sounds from inside the vehicle, according to police. He told investigators he saw six men taking boxes of crab from the truck’s rear.
The driver got out to confront them, but the men chased him away, police said. They took two pallets containing 50 boxes, each weighing about 30 pounds, then fled in several vehicles, including a gray Ford F-150 and a gray Dodge Caravan.
Police described two of the men as wearing black clothing. One was estimated to be about 5-foot-8; the other about 5-foot-6 and 180 pounds.
The investigation is ongoing.
