Philadelphia will hold funeral services Oct. 19 and 20 for Officer Shane Seiber, the 40-year-old officer killed in a shooting while responding to a call in West Philadelphia.

A Commander’s March will begin at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at Archbishop Ryan High School, 11201 Academy Road. It will proceed to John F. Givnish Funeral Home, 10975 Academy Road, where a viewing is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m.

A second viewing is set for 8:15 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 1723 Race St. A funeral service will follow at noon. Seiber will be interred privately.

The services will bring significant traffic restrictions. Academy Road will be closed in both directions between Comly and Red Lion roads from 3:30 p.m. Monday until the end of the service.

On Tuesday, 15th and Broad streets between Spring Garden and Callowhill streets, Callowhill Street between Broad and 17th streets, and 17th Street between Callowhill Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway are scheduled to close at 5:30 a.m. until the funeral procession ends. From 6 a.m. until the funeral service ends, closures are planned on Benjamin Franklin Parkway between 16th and 22nd streets; Vine Street between Logan Circle and 16th Street; Race Street between 16th and 18th streets; 17th Street between Vine Street and the parkway; and 19th Street between the parkway and Cherry Street.

Police may impose additional closures or detours near the parkway and Eakins Oval. Temporary no-parking restrictions will apply on closed streets, and vehicles parked in posted zones may be relocated. SEPTA routes may also be detoured; riders are advised to check service updates before traveling.

Seiber and his 33-year-old partner were responding to a report of a man with a gun on a porch on the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly before 1 a.m. Oct. 10 when investigators say a gunman opened fire. Seiber was shot three times and died at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. His partner, who was shot 12 times, was reported in stable condition.

Authorities identified the suspect as 35-year-old Eric Lewis, who faces charges including murder and attempted murder. Police said he had a shotgun and two handguns; one handgun belonged to Seiber or his partner.

Seiber served in the U.S. Air Force, including two tours in Iraq, before joining the Philadelphia Police Department in 2016. He served in the 22nd and 19th districts. He was a husband and father of two young children.
