Federal indictment adds five charges in fatal Philadelphia officer shooting

A federal grand jury has indicted Eric Lewis in the shooting of two Philadelphia police officers that left Officer Shane Seiber dead and Officer Hector Rodriguez seriously injured, federal prosecutors announced Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026.

Lewis, 35, faces five federal charges, including interference with interstate commerce by robbery, known as Hobbs Act robbery, according to U.S. Attorney David Metcalf. The indictment also charges him with using and discharging a firearm during a violent crime, possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, possessing a stolen firearm and stealing a firearm.

If convicted, Lewis faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and a mandatory minimum of 10 years, prosecutors said. He also faces state charges, including murder and attempted murder.

Police allege Lewis ambushed Seiber and Rodriguez in the early hours of Oct. 10, killing Seiber and wounding Rodriguez. Investigators say Lewis then took Rodriguez’s gun and fired at other officers while fleeing.

Seiber was posthumously promoted to sergeant during funeral services earlier this week. The charges are allegations, and Lewis is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
