Josephine could bring high-tide flooding and strong winds from the Mid-Atlantic to Cape Cod

Subtropical Storm Josephine is moving northeast off the U.S. East Coast, with coastal flooding possible near high tide from the Mid-Atlantic to Cape Cod through Friday, forecasters said Thursday, Oct. 22.

The National Hurricane Center reported Wednesday evening that Josephine was about 245 miles south of Nantucket, with sustained winds near 65 mph. The storm was expected to remain well offshore as it moved northeast Thursday, then dissipate over the weekend.

Most of Josephine’s rain and wind are forecast to stay over the Atlantic. Breezy to windy conditions could affect parts of the East Coast through Thursday, particularly Cape Cod, where some wind-driven rain was possible from Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Much of the coast was expected to stay dry through the weekend.

Forecasters anticipated further strengthening before Josephine became a post-tropical storm late Thursday, with hurricane-force winds possible. Even after losing tropical characteristics, a storm can still produce hazardous winds and coastal flooding.

Josephine is the 10th named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which has been quieter than usual. The 10th named storm typically forms in late September; a powerful El Niño has helped suppress Atlantic storm activity this season.
