Two men charged after fatal Dover shooting during DSU homecoming weekend
A Philadelphia man was killed and another man wounded in a shooting near Delaware State University’s homecoming gatherings. Police arrested a 22-year-old Dover man and an 18-year-old Maryland suspect in separate operations.
Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting that killed a 22-year-old Philadelphia man and injured another person near Delaware State University’s homecoming events in Dover, police said.
The shooting occurred about 9:19 p.m. Oct. 10 in a parking lot at Dover Commons, in the 1200 block of North DuPont Highway. Police identified the person killed as Nasir Cox. The injured man, who was 21, was taken to a hospital, according to authorities.
Thousands of students and visitors were gathered at nearby shopping centers and other locations for homecoming events. Dover police said officers were already in the area when the shooting happened.
Investigators identified a 22-year-old Dover resident as a suspected shooter and obtained warrants for his arrest and a search of his home. On Oct. 16, Dover police, U.S. Marshals and Delaware State Police went to a home on Crawford Avenue, where the suspect came outside after officers announced themselves and was arrested without incident, police said. Officers reported finding a handgun, ammunition and clothing and accessories they said matched items worn during the shooting.
Police later identified an 18-year-old man as a second suspected shooter. The U.S. Marshals Service’s Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located him at a home in Snow Hill, Maryland, on Oct. 21 and took him into custody. Investigators had believed he might be in Sussex County, Delaware, or eastern Maryland.
Both men face charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, three counts of firearm possession, four counts of first-degree reckless endangering and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. The allegations have not been tested in court.
