Fairhill fire linked to e-bike battery kills 3-year-old girl; her mother remains critical
A 3-year-old girl died and her 22-year-old mother remained in critical condition after a fire tore through a Fairhill rowhome early Monday, Oct. 12, Philadelphia fire officials said. The fire began around 3:30 a.m. on the 3300 block of D Street. Investigators determined that a lithium-ion battery for an electric bicycle in an upstairs bedroom caused the blaze. Officials also found no smoke detectors in the home. A 24-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son escaped through a second-story window, with neighbors helping them get out. Neighbors tried to reach the woman’s sister and the sister’s young daughter but were blocked by heavy smoke, one neighbor said. Firefighters brought the 22-year-old woman and child out of the home. Philadelphia Fire Department Deputy Chief Anthony Bompadre said emergency medical personnel provided advanced life support while transporting them to a hospital. The girl later died. Her mother’s condition was described by a neighbor as critical. The child’s name had not been released. The fire’s cause was determined by investigators, who identified the e-bike battery as the source of ignition.
