Stove fire near Edmond displaces two, kills five dogs
A fire that started on a stove spread through a northwest Oklahoma City home while the residents were away, injuring two people and killing five dogs despite firefighters' rescue efforts.
A house fire in northwest Oklahoma City displaced two residents and killed five dogs after a stove fire spread to the kitchen cabinets while the homeowners were away, fire officials said.
The Oklahoma City Fire Department and Deer Creek Fire Department responded to the home near Northwest 192nd Street and May Avenue. The house has an Edmond mailing address but sits within Oklahoma City limits.
A neighbor spotted smoke and called 911 after opening the front door to find the home filled with smoke, said Oklahoma City Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Chappell.
"One of the neighbors went to the house, opened the front door, saw the house is full of smoke, and immediately called 911," Chappell said.
Firefighters knew the residents were not home but learned that five dogs were inside. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and then focused on rescuing the animals from the smoke-filled house.
"We also had reports of five dogs inside. So, their priorities were fighting the fire and finding the dogs," Chappell said. "We went ahead and took measures and assigned the full crew just to tend to the dogs and start administering oxygen and doing what we could for them."
Despite those efforts, the dogs had inhaled too much smoke and were pronounced dead.
Chappell said he spoke with the homeowners after they arrived at the scene.
"They're, of course, upset over everything. Not just the damage to the house, but losing five dogs," he said.
With the fire out, firefighters will work to secure the home for the family as they determine their next steps.
The fire began after something on the stove caught fire, officials said. The cause remains under investigation.
