First elevated concrete deck poured for Oklahoma City’s new Thunder arena

Construction crews poured the first of more than 18 elevated concrete decks Monday at the downtown site of the future Continental Coliseum. The publicly owned, 750,000-square-foot arena is being funded through a dedicated sales tax, MAPS 4 money and a contribution from Thunder ownership.

First elevated concrete deck poured for Oklahoma City’s new Thunder arena
Construction crews poured the first elevated concrete deck early Monday at the site of Oklahoma City’s future NBA arena, marking a shift from foundation work to building out spaces for visitors, employees and eventgoers. The 750,000-square-foot Continental Coliseum is under construction on the downtown site of the former arena and convention center. More than 18 concrete decks are planned, according to project information. “While construction over the past several months focused on foundations and underground structural support systems, the elevated deck placement begins defining the spaces that will be used by guests, staff and event attendees,” said Josh Patterson, project director for Flintco|Mortenson, the construction team. Oklahoma City voters approved the new publicly owned arena in December 2023. Its funding plan includes a 72-month, one-cent sales tax that will begin after the MAPS 4 tax ends; the city has said the tax will not increase the sales-tax rate. The project also includes $89 million in MAPS 4 funding and $50 million from the Thunder ownership group.
