Edmond meal-delivery nonprofit seeks drivers and fuel help as costs rise
Edmond Mobile Meals says two volunteer drivers have left because of higher gas costs, while about five more are considering stopping. The nonprofit relies on roughly 20 drivers each weekday to deliver meals to older and homebound residents.
EDMOND, Okla. — Higher fuel costs are putting pressure on Edmond Mobile Meals, where two volunteer drivers have stepped away and about five others are considering leaving, the nonprofit’s CEO said Monday, Oct. 12.
The organization delivers hundreds of hot meals to elderly and homebound people every weekday. About 20 volunteer drivers cover routes totaling roughly 200 miles a day, CEO Cristi Twenter said.
Twenter said volunteers contacted the nonprofit in recent weeks to say they could no longer afford the gas required for deliveries. If the driver pool shrinks further, she said, staff members or board members must fill in.
Losing even one driver on a given day could affect meals for 15 to 20 Edmond residents, Twenter said. The deliveries also provide a point of human connection for some recipients: a volunteer may be the only person they see or speak with that day.
Edmond Mobile Meals is asking community members to help cover fuel expenses and is recruiting additional volunteers. Twenter said donations for gas cards have come in, and Love’s has also contributed gas cards to help drivers stay on the road.
