Booker T. Washington Park gets $5.1 million recreation overhaul
Oklahoma City approved final plans for a $5.1 million renovation of Booker T. Washington Park in northeast OKC. The project calls for new courts, a playground and splash pad, along with shaded gathering spaces and other improvements.
Oklahoma City’s Booker T. Washington Park is slated for a $5.1 million makeover, after the City Council approved final plans Tuesday, Oct. 13.
The park, at Northeast Fourth Street and North High Avenue, is part of the first phase of neighborhood and community park improvements funded through MAPS 4. The plans include four basketball courts, two tennis courts, three pickleball courts and a futsal court, as well as a playground and splash pad.
Other proposed features include shade structures, seating, artificial-turf berms, a plaza, signage and a hammock and reading nook.
MAPS Program Manager David Todd described the park as a community gathering place and said the work is intended to improve areas for recreation, sports, events and play. OKC Parks Director Melinda McMillan-Miller said the city hopes the park will remain a focal point and gathering space for northeast Oklahoma City for years to come.
The upgrades will add a range of recreation options and gathering spaces at a park the city identifies as an important community anchor.
