Tennessee faces SEC penalty after Neyland Stadium field rush

Tennessee faces SEC penalty after Neyland Stadium field rush

The Southeastern Conference has fined the University of Tennessee $500,000 after thousands of fans rushed the field at Neyland Stadium following the Vols’ football win over Alabama on Oct. 17.

The SEC said the violation breached its policy restricting access to competition areas. The fine is payable to Alabama, the visiting team, under conference rules.

The league’s policy bars spectators from entering the playing area before, during or after a contest. It does allow schools to arrange postgame celebrations on the field if visiting-team personnel and game officials have safely left, and if the school submits its plan to the conference in advance and tells fans how the process will work.

The SEC commissioner may reduce Tennessee’s fine to $100,000 if the university makes its case that it made a full effort to stop fans from entering the field, that few people got onto the competition area and that interaction with Alabama’s team was minimal.

Tennessee’s victory marked the third consecutive time the Vols had beaten Alabama at home. The SEC’s access policy, first adopted in 2004, applies across conference-sponsored sports and was most recently amended in 2025.
