Vanderbilt sophomore Kayleb Barnett dropped from football program after Nashville arrest
Vanderbilt sophomore wide receiver Kayleb Barnett has been removed from the football program after being charged in connection with a fight near Nashville’s Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge, the university said Monday, Oct. 12. Barnett faces charges of aggravated assault involving strangulation, identity theft and using false identification, according to arrest warrants. The charges stem from an incident on Oct. 11. “Kayleb Barnett violated team and university standards and is no longer with the program,” Vanderbilt Athletics said in a statement. A police officer stationed near Second Avenue South reported seeing what appeared to be a fight south of the pedestrian bridge. In an affidavit, the officer said Barnett was holding another man in a chokehold as police approached. The man fell, bleeding and apparently unconscious, but regained consciousness shortly after officers detained Barnett, the affidavit says. A witness told police Barnett threw the first punch. Barnett told officers the other man swung first, and said he held the man down to prevent another attack. Police identified Barnett as the predominant aggressor, according to the affidavit. Officers also found two identification cards bearing Barnett’s name and photograph but listing different birth dates, the warrants say. Police said one set of information matched Barnett and the other belonged to someone else. The warrants do not specify when or how he allegedly used either card. The charges are allegations; the warrants do not establish guilt. Vanderbilt’s statement did not provide further details about Barnett’s departure from the team.
