Some rideshare drivers skip BNA after reported ICE detention
Some Nashville rideshare drivers avoided airport trips Oct. 22 after a Venezuelan Lyft driver was reportedly detained during a drop-off at BNA. The incident also renewed questions about how law enforcement agencies can use airport license-plate camera data.
Some rideshare drivers chose not to take trips to Nashville International Airport on Oct. 22 after a Venezuelan man who drives for Lyft was reportedly detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while dropping off a passenger at the airport.
Music City Migra Watch, an immigrant advocacy group, said the driver was detained at about 4:40 a.m. in the arrivals area. The group said a passenger reported the incident and that the driver’s vehicle was later taken to an ICE field office. It said the man has a pending asylum case and also works as a barber in Nashville.
Joseph Hill, co-president of the Tennessee Drivers Union, said drivers contacted the group after video of the detention circulated online. Some decided independently to boycott airport trips for the day, he said. The union has organized protests at BNA over rideshare pay and working conditions.
The reported detention prompted renewed concern about BNA’s use of Flock Safety, a system of automated license-plate readers and surveillance cameras used by law enforcement agencies. Flock says ICE does not have direct access to its cameras, systems or data unless the agencies controlling that information explicitly allow it.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority said its public safety department does not conduct immigration searches for ICE, but that the standard Flock database is accessible to organizations with system access. The authority said outside agencies’ searches are recorded in its audit log and that airport cameras have been used in immigration-related searches. It directed questions about those searches to the agencies involved.
Airport officials referred questions about the reported detention to ICE. The federal agency had not responded by the time the report was published.
