Portland man faces charges after reported knife incident at former girlfriend’s home

A Portland man is facing charges after police say he tried to force his way into his former girlfriend’s home with a knife while she and her infant child were inside.

Officers responded Oct. 10 to a reported domestic disturbance. The woman told police that Walter Hayes was at her front door with a knife and repeatedly kicked it in an attempt to get inside, according to the Portland Police Department.

The woman and child had locked themselves in a bathroom while waiting for officers, police said. Hayes had left before officers arrived. Officers checked on the two, searched the area and later escorted them to a safe location.

Investigators said the home’s doorbell camera had been removed and disabled, and the front-door handle was broken. Police said they later contacted Hayes by phone, but he did not cooperate with the investigation.

Warrants charged Hayes with aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit aggravated burglary and vandalism involving less than $1,000. He was arrested Oct. 14 and released on a $40,000 bond.

Hayes is scheduled to make an initial appearance in Sumner County General Sessions Court on Oct. 30. The charges are allegations; the court will determine the case.
