Milwaukee special education teacher killed in beating near 12th and Walnut
Harry Bruce, 56, a longtime special education teacher and football coach at Roosevelt Middle School, was strangled and beaten to death Thursday night near 12th and Walnut. A 22-year-old has been arrested, and the school community is mourning a mentor who friends say died trying to break up a fight.
MILWAUKEE â A longtime Milwaukee Public Schools special education teacher was killed in a beating Thursday night near 12th and Walnut streets, and a 22-year-old has been arrested in connection with his death, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.
The victim was identified as Harry Bruce, 56, who taught at Roosevelt Middle School for more than ten years. The medical examiner's office said Bruce was strangled and beaten and died at the scene.
A close friend, Reginald Bell, said Bruce was trying to break up a fight when the young man turned on him. Bell said the two met at church years ago and had been friends ever since.
"I got this phone call, and he said something happened, but I didn't know what had happened," Bell said. "He explained that he was trying to break up a fight and the young man turned on him and got very vicious on him."
Bell described Bruce as a devoted family man and a steady presence in the lives of students. "He was a provider, he was a protector and he was so loved," Bell said. He said he plans to attend court proceedings when the case goes to trial.
In a letter to parents, Roosevelt Middle School Principal Tiffany Fisher said Bruce was more than a teacher. "In addition to being a teacher, he served as a football coach, tutor, and mentor to many students," Fisher wrote. "He made a lasting impact on the lives of those he worked with, and his presence will be deeply missed throughout our school community."
The school said counselors and other support staff are available to help students cope with the loss.
The killing has shaken a school community that relied on Bruce for years, and it raises familiar questions about safety and violence in Milwaukee neighborhoods. For families at Roosevelt, the loss is personal: a teacher who coached football, tutored students and mentored young people is gone, and the district is now focused on helping children process the death of an educator they knew well.
Police have not released additional details about the circumstances of the arrest or potential charges. The investigation is ongoing.
