Milwaukee firefighters responded to a reported gas smell at Transition High School on North 36th Street around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, prompting an evacuation of the building. One person was evaluated at the scene, the Milwaukee Fire Department said. Firefighters secured the building’s gas supply and began ventilating it. The department dispatched an engine, a ladder truck and a battalion chief, then sent a second ladder truck because of the building’s size and the equipment needed to clear the air. The cause of the odor was not immediately known, and officials had not said how long the evacuation would last or where evacuees were directed. We Energies was called to the scene and said it was looking into the situation. Milwaukee Public Schools had not responded to an inquiry by the time of the report. Transition High School is an alternative school serving students ages 17 to 21 who are considered at risk. The incident temporarily displaced students and staff, though the number of people evacuated was not reported.
