Teen taken to hospital after dog escapes search in northwest Miami-Dade

A 17-year-old girl was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital after a dog attacked her Wednesday at a home near Northwest 66th Street and 17th Avenue in Miami-Dade County, authorities said. The dog, named Diablo, remained loose Thursday after deputies were unable to capture it.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said a deputy used an electronic control weapon when the dog approached from behind. The device did not hit the animal, and Diablo ran from the property into the surrounding neighborhood.

Deputies found the injured teenager inside the home. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported her to the hospital. The dog’s owner told local television crews the girl was doing better and was seen leaving the property on a stretcher with an arm bandaged.

The owner said she does not live at the property, which she rents to others, and that residents in a rear unit help care for Diablo. She said she had contacted Miami-Dade Animal Services about bringing in the dog after the bite, but was told the facility was full.

“Even if I do find him, what am I supposed to do?” the owner said, adding that she wanted to get the dog off the streets safely. She described the attack as possibly an isolated incident, while acknowledging the risk of another bite. She also said Diablo responds only to commands in Spanish.

The owner questioned why Animal Services did not respond with law enforcement after the attack. The available information did not include an update from the agency on its response or whether the search was continuing Thursday.
